Celtic gypsy punk? Hell, yeah.
It's what The Dreadnoughts deliver on their aptly named third album, Polka's Not Dead, after exploring gypsy sounds on their sophomore release, Victory Square.
The band are another rugged offspring of East Vancouver's revitalized punk scene, and their Celtic roots mean they know how to get fast and loud. Apparently they know their way around Gogol
Bordello gypsy polka as well as they do Flogging Molly Celtic punk romps. Throw in some aggressive sea shanties and you get rollicking, melodic folk punk.
The a cappella shanty "Randy Dandy-Oh" slows the pace, as do gypsy waltz "Clavdia's Waltz" (mostly) and doleful closer, "Za Smierc Przy Jaciela," a violin sorrow in gosh-oh-gee minor.
Otherwise, fast-paced polka 'n' punk numbers abound, from opener "Cider Road" — which often sounds as though Bad Religion added a mandolin and bouzouki — to Surfin' Turnips cover "Turbo Island,"
to the ecstatic Gogol-inspired rhythms of "Sleep Is For The Weak." Standouts include "Poutine," a hilarious hook-heavy Celtic-gypsy fusion, and "West Country Man," a jovial accordion-driven Irish
drinking song.
The Dreadnoughts have commandeered the gypsy punk bandwagon and steered it in a clever new direction. The least that deserves is a "Hell, yeah!"
