In life, some people get hyped for work they have not done, others laid foundations through hard work but never really got the respect they deserve. Of the latter is Clinton Fearon. With his latest album Heart And Soul, French roots experts of Chapter Two Records present yet another opportunity to catch up with this foundation legend‘s solo works (In France, by the way, Fearon gets much more recognition than in most other places).

The album contains twelve acoustic tracks Fearon had written for the Gladiators, which he joined in 1969. He spent 18 years with the trio before he moved on to other projects, with different bands and solo. Thus, roots reggae lovers are likely to already know all of the tunes on Heart And Soul: Chatty Chatty Mouth, Follow The Rainbow, Rich Man Poor Man, I‘m Not Crying... What is new is the acoustic interpretation of them.

Up front I need to clarify that I have never been too much of a fan of acoustic reggae albums. These tend to be a bit too simplistic for me musically - thus reggae‘s stunning, hypnotic catchiness gets attenuated a bit. In this case though, it leaves precious space for Clinton Fearon‘s singular, soulful voice to shine and make up for it. With bass, guitars and percussion, ranging from glasses of water to cowbells to congas and even a tama (the West African talking drum), instrumentation is varying enough to keep the riddims interesting.

Heart And Soul is a vibrant gem that just does not get boring. Make sure you check out the CD version: if you would opt for digital download, you would miss out on the booklet with Clinton Fearon‘s insightful remarks on the original versions of the tunes featured. Like this one, talking about Ernest Ranglin: “When he started on Let Jah Be Praised I was so excited I thought I was gonna pee in my pants!”

Clinton Fearon est aujourd'hui l'un des derniers représentants de ce que l'on a appelé le "Proverbial Reggae", qu'il a contribué à forger au sein des Gladiators (il a notamment écrit Chatty Chatty
Mouth et Rich Man Poor Man), avant de quitter la formation en 1987 et de s'installer à Seattle, à l'occasion d'une tournée du groupe aux Etats-Unis.

Après avoir tourné en acoustique (l'album "Me and mi guitar") c'est plutôt naturellement que Clinton Fearon a rejoint la team Inna de Yard au printemps. Et c'est donc sans grande surprise Makasound
(sur son label Makafresh) qui accueille son dernier album, "Mi Deh Yah".



Comme les précédents, "Mi Deh Yah" est produit hors de Jamaïque, à Seattle, mais c'est probablement l'album de sa carrière solo qui "sonne" le plus jamaïcain. Sans trop changer de recette
évidemment : un reggae épuré, sans fioritures (dont il joue la plupart des instruments), avec la basse en clef de voûte et l'accent sur les mélodies.

C'est cette ambiance, avec des textes déclamant des dictons et autres proverbes répétés à l'envi, que l'on retrouve ici, à l'image de The Best ("nothing beats a try but a harder try, the best is
your best"), ou du mélancolique Feeling Blue, emmené par un violon, de l'éponyme Mi De Yah, ou encore Are you ready. Les amateurs de Clinton Fearon ne seront pas déçus.

Clinton Fearon est un chanteur et musicien jamaïcain  de reggae, né le 13 février 1951 à Saint Andrews. Etabli à Seattle (USA) depuis 1987.



Clinton Fearon est né près de Kingston mais grandit à la campagne dans la province de Ste Catherine.



Il découvre la musique dans l’église adventiste de ce parish en Jamaïque. Il sera sur les banc de l'ecole aux cotes de Joseph Hill (Culture). A 16 ans il quitte les montagnes de Sainte Catherine
et s'installe a Kingston et crée le groupe The Brothers. Le groupe tente quelques auditions notamment chez Treasure Isle, sans succès. Mais c'est à travers ce groupe que Clinton Fearon rencontre
Errol Grandison, qui lui proposera d'être le troisième Gladiator, en 1969, pour remplacer David Webber. Il entre d'abord dans le groupe comme guitariste. Après le départ d'Errol Grandison, il
devient le bassiste et un des choristes du groupe (occasionnellement chanteur, par exemple sur Chatty Chatty Mouth, Richman Poorman, Get Ready, Let Jah Be Praised, "Can You Imagine How I Feel",
"On The Other Side", etc.) du groupe The Gladiators de 1969 à 1987. Clinton Fearon est sans conteste l'un des piliers du groupe aux cotes de Albert Griffiths. Durant ces 18 années, il travaille
aussi en tant que session-man au Studio One de Coxsone, au Black Ark Studio de Lee Perry ou encore pour Joe Gibbs, Yabby You, Joseph Hookim et Prince Tony Robinson.





Estimant n'avoir pas assez d'espace au sein du groupe, il quitte subitement le groupe et s'établit aux États-Unis, à Seattle, suite à la tournée américaine des Gladiators de 1987, et compte
lancer sa carrière solo. Albert Griffiths aura du mal à comprendre ce geste. Clinton crée, à Seattle, The Defenders avec quelques uns des musiciens des Gladiators. Le groupe connaîtra un succès
d’estime avec le maxi Rock Your Bones en 1989. Le groupe cesse son activité en 1992.



Puis, en 1994 voit le jour le premier album de Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band (Lamar Lofton a la basse, Girt Bolo a la batterie, John Saba a la guitare et Barbara Kennedy aux
claviers) : Disturb The Devil marque véritablement le début de la carrière solo de Clinton Fearon. Il crée le label Boogie Brown Productions. Suivront les albums Mystic Whisper, What A System un
double album avec la partie dub mixée par Scientist, et une compilation de ces trois albums en 2002 Soon Come. Deux ans plus tard Give And Take prouve que l'inspiration de Clinton Fearon n'est
pas prête de s'arrêter.



Autre chapitre de sa discographie, Mi An' Mi Guitar (2005) offre l'album acoustique que tout le monde attendait. Clinton y reprend certaines des chansons qu'il a composées à l'époque Gladiators,
comme Richman Poorman et Streets of Freedom, et d'autres inédites.



Clinton Fearon publie un nouvel opus en 2006, Visions, qui comporte, comme dans ses précédents albums, de longues et mélodiques chansons qu'il part jouer sur scène aux Etats-Unis, au Brésil et
