For his first solo album, 71-year-old trumpeter Mirabal has created a tribute to the seminal bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez. The latter was a tres-wielding maverick who reveled in Cuba's African
heritage and gave new opportunities to the piano and brass. With three trumpeters on board, it is not surprising that the tracks often explode into blaring, festive, sloppy--precise fanfares, but
Papi Oviedo on tres and pianist Roberto Fonseca more than hold their own. The singers also get a workout, notably on Me Bote De Guano, with its humming opening chorus and robust tenor lead vocal.
The late Rubén González, who was Rodriguez's original keyboard man, is heard on Dombe Dombe, a tune he suggested for the set list. The sessions were recorded in Havana at legendary Egrem Studios
with a minimum of technical bells-and-whistles and if the sonic texture is somewhat rough and remote, it only adds to the studio-live atmosphere.

PalmaCoco, is a Latin music group, created by producer Sr.Ortegon Cali. His musical style is what they call the "BoogaFlow" (mix of  60´s latin boogaloo and urban music).



The idea of merging the old school salsa, theboogaloo, the shing-a-ling, mambo, with urban music, was born in Paris  nearly 10 years with the DJ "Fercho the Bacan" and the artistic director
of Boogaloo Concept, Stan Galou.  This was because the rhythm pattern has always been an obsession the Sr.Ortegon,  and he belives that the latin Boogaloo, despite its short
lifetime,  was very important for the Latin music industry in the U.S. ( Watussi eg), which managed to dance to the non-Latinos of the time and besides, it was the first authentic musical
expression of the Latino born in NY.



After several experiments with French rappers and dj, this fusion was just giving light to what would be the BoogaFlow, which was given its present form in Bogota in 2008. Sr.Ortegon met the
reggae singer and MC: Pana Black after a concert in San Andres iland and with the producer John Celis, made the first PalmaCoco format.



Back then, in his show, Sr.Ortegon played BoogaFlow mixing electronica music with Salsa, Bomba, Plena and Cumbia.



Gradually PalmaCoco was molding into the BoogaFlow show, because the public was more receptive at this as well as the electronic music apart.

Attention ! Latin Jazz ! Pour les amateurs du genre, ou de jazz tout court : un pur moment de bonheur. Pour ceux qui aiment moins (dont je suis) : un film musical hors norme, suivi d’un
documentaire d’une exceptionnelle qualité. Le réalisateur a souhaité faire un film dont le scénario serait "les morceaux qu’il choisirait et qui seraient interprétés" et les acteurs les
musiciens, et nous offre un large éventails de "genres" dans le Latin Jazz. Toutes les interprétations sont filmées en studio (d’où une qualité d’écoute excellente, vous pouvez d’ailleurs choisir
entre trois formats audio) sous forme de tableaux colorés où les musiciens sont filmés dans chaque détail - ils sont vraiment traités comme des acteurs : gros plans sur un œil, une main, un
sourire... Documents exceptionnels entre tous, la dernière apparition à l’écran de Tito Puente, et les retrouvailles entre Bebo et Chucho Valdes (père et fils), un grand, très grand moment
d’émotion, palpable au travers de l’écran ! Le documentaire est à savourer doucement. Chacun des musiciens du film va nous faire part de son interprétation des origines du Latin Jazz
(heureusement tous ont à peu près la même ), de ses propres origines, des musiques et musiciens qui les ont inspirés, de ses sensibilités… et enfin de ses anecdotes, qui à elles seules valent le
détour. Un moment d’anthologie : la tentative d’explication de ce qu’est la clave. Et la découverte de beaucoup des interactions entre le jazz et la musique afro-caribéenne (origines,
instruments, rythmes, musiciens).
