While Kosheen took drum'n'bass to the mainstream club and Pendulum twisted it into something approaching fist-pumping, arena rock, Ror-Shak want to become the Zero 7 or Röyksopp of drum'n'bass. Members DJ DB and Shaun Morris bring the genre into the lounge on their debut album, Deep, a laid-back and often spacy effort that works best in the background thanks to some cringe-worthy words. Luckily, these producers have great taste in vocalists with Naked Music veteran Lisa Shaw supplying the soul while David Lynch's muse Julee Cruise supplies the previously mentioned spaciness. Morningwood frontwoman Chantal Claret does an excellent job on this slowly building cover of the Cure's "A Forest," but it's the lesser known Wendy Starland who comes in first with her jazzy, Billie Holiday inspired voice gracing two cuts. Ror-Shak's rich, warm soundscapes and their infectious drum'n'bass rhythms would be just as listenable as instrumentals, so even with all the beautiful voices, Deep would be better off stripped of some hippy, trippy, and trite words.

Le 8 février 2009 aux Grammy Awards , Nas annonce à des journalistes de MTV qu'il travaille actuellement sur un album en collaboration avec Damian Marley. Il déclare qu'ils projettent grâce à cet album de construire des écoles en Afrique.[2]

De son côté, Damian Marley déclare dans Rolling Stone que l'album est un mélange des deux univers du rap et du reggae et qu'il pourrait servir à construire des écoles au Congo. Marley présente cet album comme un "album de charité" mais un album qu'on peut écouter dans sa voiture.
À l'origine, le projet ne devait être qu'un EP de quelques titres et seulement destiné au continent africain.

Production et enregistrement :

Nas et Damian Marley débutent l'enregistrement en 2008, avec des sessions à Los Angeles et Miami. La majeure partie de l'album est produite par Damian Marley et son frère, Stephen. Nas prévoyait également de collaborer avec d'autres producteurs tels que Large Professor, The Alchemist, Jonathan "JR" Rotem et DJ Khalil. Au niveau des collaborations, les artistes ont fait appel à Stevie Wonder, K'Naan, Joss Stone, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg et même Bob Marley, le père de Damian...

Avec le temps, la musique de Quannum est devenue moins intrigante que par le passé. Aux innovations et à la fougue du début, a succédé un adult rap bon enfant, un hip hop pour les vieux imprégné de funk et de rock rétro, fort certes d'un grand savoir-faire, d'une ouverture d'esprit rare, d'humour, d'intelligence, mais infiniment plus neutre et plus fade qu'un The Album de Latyrx ou qu'un Nia de Blackalicious. Et il s'en faut de peu pour que les sorties du collectif ne soient plus suivies avec la même assiduité qu'il y a huit ou dix ans. Mais n'allons pas refaire un procès qui a déjà eu lieu sur ces pages, il y a quelques années, à propos de "Later That Day". Non, voyons le bon côté des choses. Puisqu'une fois expurgé d'une bonne moitié de ses titres, cet album de funk rap tout plein de vrais instruments vaut encore bien le premier Gnarls Barkley venu.

Parmi quelques titres d'un funk molasson tout juste bon pour l'aerobic ("Hott 2 Deff", "Cakewalk", "I'm a Phreak") et une poignée de skits humoristiques (ce "Shoe Hoe Anonymous" où le rappeur se met en scène dans un groupe de parole), après un exercice r'n'bisant convenu où Lyrics Born et Joyo Velarde, couple à la ville, discutent des différences irréductibles entre hommes et femmes ("Differences"), surgissent quelques plages nettement plus réjouissantes : cet "I Like It, I Love It" entraînant pour de bon, dans la droite lignée d'un "Lady Don't Tek no", ce "The World is Calling" qui sait user avec succès de choeurs féminins, ce "Do U Buy It" aux faux airs de B52's, cet "I Can't Decide" où le rap de Lyrics Born n'a jamais autant ressemblé à celui de Cee-Lo et ce remix tout en guitares de "Let Me In, Let Me Out". Tout un tas de titres groupés au coeur de l'album et qui donnent corps aux envies de fête de Lyrics Born.

Alors maintenant vous savez quoi faire. Acheter l'album, l'expurger des titres en trop en le copiant sur votre lecteur MP3, et jouir de ce qui reste, toutes choses égales par ailleurs, comme du rap amplement supérieur au tout-venant.
